Increasing Divorce Cases in India. What's the reason?

Marriages in India are considered very sacred. There has been an increase in love marriages for the past few decades. Before that, people used to get married due to their parent’s wishes. Even an unhappy marriage didn’t lead to divorce- for the sake of family reputation, for children, and just because it was looked down on.

However, now with the social mindset changing, there has been an increase in the divorce rates in India. Compared to the 50% rate of the USA, India’s divorce rate is still low. However, 1 in 100 marriages fail. This might not seem a significant number, but it was 7.004 in 1000 marriages before a few decades. Now, if we see, there has been a sharp increase. Let’s look at some reasons contributing to this change.

  • Women have become more independent now, financially, mentally, physically, and socially. Gone are the days when a maximum number of women were housewives. They have started earning, and sometimes there are situations when they earn more than their partner. Men have difficulties in digesting this, and this leads to ego clashes. There is dissatisfaction, and the women are ready to walk off from marriage. Increasing women's independence has led to an increase in divorce rates.
  • Domestic violence has prevailed as a reason for divorces. There is physical abuse from both sides. When it comes to women, rarely do they receive help from men in managing the household chores. With responsibilities of work, home and children there is stress. The situation gets traumatic, and the only way to get off from It seems to be escaping from these responsibilities. The marriage fails.
  • Dominance and inequality has also been one of the reasons. Be it the husband or the wife; manipulative marriage is something no one is willing to live in. Modern-day marriages seek the status of equality. Constant suppression can lead to the dissolution of marriages.
  • The biggest reason for divorce is adultery. Extramarital affairs damage the relationship. Women cheating on men is as high as men cheating on them. With no trust left, the relationship rifts apart, leading to divorce.

Many marriages fail due to increasing distance between the partners:

  1. They can’t express themselves well.
  2. There is a lack of communication.
  3. There is miscommunication, which causes constant debates.
  4. Partners don’t make the effort of understanding each other, and argument never stops.
  5. After being tired, communication stops, and it ends up in divorce.

  • Then there are forced marriages. Again, due to family pressure, two people who don’t have feelings for each other come together in what may seem like an agreement. However, due to lack of emotions, and constant unhappiness, these marriages also do not work most of the time.

Divorce isn’t a tragedy. If someone is unhappy, then taking a divorce is the best thing to do. However, divorce can easily be avoided if there are mutual efforts. Like any relationship, marriage also needs love and respect, and it needs efforts much more than any other relationship. Marriage is not just between two individuals; two families get together in it. And then a whole new family branches out of it. With no effort, the relationship is bound to end.
