Transport- The Maker and Breaker of Cities

Human beings usually consider- food, clothing and shelter as the primitive conditions they need to survive. But that does not explain it all. How are you supposed to get the necessary materials for all these? These are just end-products. We have to obtain many implements to get these three finally. And an essential aspect for getting all of these is- Transport.

Now we don’t consider transport essential. As long as it’s functioning well and helping us with what we need, we don’t care. Much like any organ system in our body. Only when there is a crisis, that we start watching about them. We can’t conceive human life without transport, and that’s a fact.

The idea of transport began in the ages of early man. People had to search for food, hunt animals and roaming around didn’t seem wise to them. Soon they started settling near rivers as groups. When villages were established, and cultivation started, their brains evolved to begin trading. And then came the concept of transport. People had to go to other towns, and travelling on foot wasn’t easy. So they invented the wheel and then began this fantastic journey of transportation.

Transport is what makes our life, our cities. We are dependent on it. Transport is a vital part of our life. However, there is more. It can also disintegrate our towns.

When people began settling, and the population density of the village increased, the demand for transport reduced. Even today, some people would stick to a very plain diet, such that they don’t have to spend on transportation costs. However, transportation can increase the costs of food grains.

The available means of transport are priced way above what most citizens can afford.  Due to this, these people still use walking as a means of transportation. What’s more, cities are planned so that transport isn’t even available for some places. Soon, there might be two sections- one in which people can afford a car and the other they can’t. The first section would be able to enjoy all other things like- education, recreation and more. But, at the same time, the other section of people would have to struggle.

So, what can be done? Well, a wise option would be to group people only up to a manageable size. In such a case, people in a community would be closer to each other. Moreover, they would take part in local affairs and know their city well. Also, they wouldn’t have to travel far, which can rekindle their interest in transport.

On the other hand, they would be separated from people in a far-off community. This is also necessary for economic reasons. With this option, people would be more interested, traffic congestion would be less, and it will also prevent other things to get expensive, such as local administration,

So as we see, nothing comes with all good and evil. Things are supposed to be handled wisely and made to work efficiently.
