According to court documents, Jamie Spears has agreed to stand down as conservator of his daughter Britney Spears' estate "when the time is appropriate."
Jamie Spears' departure would be a major step forward in her lengthy battle to be free of her father's influence. The news comes almost two months after the singer came out in court, demanding an end to the contentious arrangement that has ruled her life for the past 13 years, giving her father and others power over her personal and professional lives.
Jamie Spears' lawyer wrote in a court filing on Thursday that his client "does not believe that a public battle with his daughter over his continued service as her conservator would be in her best interests," and that "Mr. Spears intends to work with the court and his daughter's new attorney to prepare for an orderly transition to a new conservator." Jamie has "already been working on such a transfer" with his daughter's prior lawyer, according to the petition.
“Mr. Spears continues to serve honorably, and he should not be suspended or dismissed, especially not on the basis of false allegations,” the petition said. "Mr. Spears is willing to step aside when the time comes, but the transfer must be smooth and involve the settlement of any outstanding judicial matters.” His counsel requested that a judge dismiss the petition for his departure.
In an email to the Guardian on Thursday, Britney Spears' lawyer, Mathew Rosengart, said the filing was "a huge win for Britney Spears and another step toward justice," but asked Jamie to "step down immediately."
"We look forward to continuing our thorough investigation into Mr. Spears' and others' actions over the previous 13 years, while he collected millions of dollars from his daughter's inheritance," he said, "and I look forward to taking Mr. Spears' sworn deposition in the near future."
Britney Spears has accused her father of "conservatorship abuse," claiming that the conservatorship compelled her to work against her choice and restricted her personal health decisions, as well as her ability to marry or have another kid.
Jamie Spears' lawyer claimed in a court statement on Thursday that he had been the target of "unjustified assaults" and "false claims." Britney Spears's mother, Lynne Spears, has also called for Jamie Spears' removal, according to the filing.
Britney Spears has spoken out twice in front of a judge in recent months, begging for her life to be taken back and for her father's legal authority over her to be revoked. On the 14th of July, she stated, "I'm here to get rid of my father and accuse him with conservatorship abuse... I was constantly terrified of my father.”
The singer, who appeared by phone during the session, demanded that her father be investigated and that a restraining order be granted against him. “They were continuously trying to make me feel like I was insane, which I'm not,” she claimed of people engaged in the conservatorship. She also repeated accusations she made during a prior visit, such as being forced to take medicines against her choice. She stated, "I believe they were attempting to murder me."
