DevOps teams are continuously attempting to improve themselves so that they can release software more rapidly and consistently, but they often lack the insights required to do so.
Atlassian has added a number of new features to its Jira Software Cloud platform that delivers data-driven insights into the development process. Jira is a popular issue and project tracking software that includes features that help developers and their teams understand where they are in the development process.
The new insights go above and beyond what Jira has previously offered its customers, providing particular insights into several facets of an agile software development approach. The new insights are intended to assist firms in better understanding what they're doing properly and where development teams may improve, resulting in increased overall efficiency.
Megan Cook, Jira Software's head of product, told TechCrunch, "Data is everywhere, but insights and awareness of the actions that you can do are kinds of nowhere." “It's difficult to work smarter in that sense, and that's the big problem we're trying to solve.”
Cook emphasised that development teams want access to analytics on their own progress in order to make better data-driven decisions based on real-time events. One of the major improvements Atlassian is making with Jira Cloud, she said, is integrating data from all of the different development tracking tools together in one location where teams can make decisions.
Sprint commitments are one example of the insights that Jira Cloud now delivers to users. Software is built in what is known as "sprints" under the agile software development approach, as developers compete to fulfil a specific task. The goal of the sprint commitment insight capability is to help teams determine how much work they can handle based on their previous performance. The business goal is to determine whether a team is overcommitting or under committing to a sprint.
Providing a breakdown of issue types is another example. Cook emphasised that each team's approach to categorising difficulties is unique. The categories can include a variety of project kinds, such as bug fixes and technical debt, innovation or growth products, or incremental feature updates. There is a visualisation with the problem type breakdown insight to help teams better grasp what types of issues and projects they are working on in a more intuitive way than previously.
Cook stated that the firm will be providing a few more insights in the coming weeks, including the sprint burndown insight. The burndown is used in the agile software development approach to determine what is left to finish in a sprint. The sprint burndown insight will show how much work remains to be done and how likely it is that the job will be completed within the allotted time.
Atlassian's strategy to enabling developer teams to operate more efficiently has been one of the company's primary ideals for years, and it has resulted in great overall growth. Atlassian announced $560 million in sales in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2021, up 30% year over year thanks to its developer communication and management solutions.
