Some hosts on Twitter's live audio function, Spaces, will soon be able to sell admission to Ticketed Spaces, the company revealed today. Users who are above 18, have hosted three Spaces in the last 30 days, and have at least 1,000 followers can apply for Ticketed Spaces.
A Twitter official told TechCrunch, "We're continuing to work closely with those who are already hosting Spaces for Ticketed Spaces." Twitter wouldn't specify how many people this feature has been rolled out to so far, or when users may expect a more widespread distribution. For the time being, anyone with an iOS device can purchase tickets to Spaces hosted by users who have access to the functionality.
“We want to help people creating cool Spaces make $$$. today, some Hosts will be able create Ticketed Spaces! We’re experimenting on iOS only for now but we hope to get it to everyone soon. know it’s taking us a little time, but we want to get this right for you!”
Twitter has already said that Ticketed Spaces will take a 3% portion of creator earnings. However, because the functionality is now only available on iOS, Twitter will be subject to Apple's 30% in-app purchase price, which means that a creator will only receive 67 percent of each ticket sale. If a creator's total career revenues on Twitter exceed $50,000 (including Ticketed Spaces and Super Follows), Twitter will increase its 3 percent commission to 20%.
Twitter's Ticketed Spaces would set it apart from its live audio competitors. Listeners can tip speakers or award badges in a live audio area via Clubhouse and Instagram, but advance ticket sales are not available.
